I'm listening to my compilation which has lots of Paul Weller (and a bit of Morrissey)

Play the whole thing for best effect. That site is amazing. You spend hours searching for tracks but at least you don't have to get all your CD's out. And you find songs you've forgotten about or never heard before.

I swear that's TW on the background vocals in Morrissey's Sunny :)

I'm going to make a thousand more of these tapes.

Blame it on the weather? All that rain last year and the floods and Truck lost a lot of money. I think they just do the festival now?

ESP will always have their fans. I'm sure there'll be another label given time.

Soundofviolence has posted a review, 3/5. I don't like writing that because I write reviews but... God I wonder if the person who wrote it really listened to the record because from what I read, we obviously did not hear the same record!

I love Truffaut. Especially when he plays in his movies, he was so... awkward! You should try the Doinel movies I just can't remember the titles...

I saw Into the Wild and the Eddie Vedder's songs. I kinda liked the film but I think it's a bit too long and too didactic.

Last thing was the soundtrack to a film I just watched, the acoustic songs reminded me a lot of the TW stuff. And the film as I guessed was a true story and it really gets to you at the end.

Into The Wild 2007, from Amazon:

Sean Penn's screen adaptation of Jon Krakauer's bestselling book. Emile Hirsch stars as Christopher McCandless, scion of a prosperous but troubled family who, after graduating from Atlanta's Emory University in the early 1990s, decides to chuck it all in and become a self-styled "aesthetic voyager" in search of "ultimate freedom."

He certainly doesn't do it by halves: after donating his substantial savings account to charity and literally torching the rest of his cash, McCandless changes his name (to "Alexander Supertramp"), abandons his family (William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden as his bickering, clueless parents and Jena Malone as his baffled but loving sister, who relates much of the back-story in voice-over), and hits the road, bound for the Alaskan bush and determined not to be found.

For the next two years he lives the life of a vagabond, working a few odd jobs, kayaking through the Grand Canyon into Mexico, landing on L.A.'s Skid Row, and turning his back on everyone who tries to befriend him (including Catherine Keener and Brian Dierker as two kindly, middle-aged hippies and Hal Holbrook in a deeply affecting performance as an old widower who tries to take "Alex" under his wing)

Penn, who directed and wrote the screenplay, alternates these interludes with scenes depicting McCandless' Alaskan idyll - which soon turns out be not so idyllic after all. Settling into an abandoned school bus, he manages to sustain himself for a while, shooting small game (and one very large moose), reading, and recording his existential musings on paper.

But when the harsh realities of life in the wilderness set in, our boy finds himself well out of his depth, not just ill-prepared for the rigors of day to day survival but realising the importance of the very thing he wanted to escape - namely, human relationships.

It'd be easy to either idealise McCandless as a genuinely free spirit, unencumbered by the societal strictures that tie the rest of us down, or else dismiss him as a hopelessly callow naïf, a fool whose disdain for practical realities ultimately doomed him. Into the Wild does neither, for the most part telling the tale with an admirable lack of cheap sentiment and leaving us to decide for ourselves.

Albums Of The Week

I Dream Of Black is Thomas's debut solo album and showcases his multi-instrument talents. It's a mix of rocky riffs and mellow songs, from crowd-pleasing The Runaround to the smooth music hall sound and nostalgic lyrics of Wartime Love. At just over 37 minutes, it's a short album but best listened to all at once. Rating: 8/10

If you found The Electric Soft Parade's 'No Need To Be Downhearted' a little too sunshiney, investigate this curiosity from their vocalist Thomas White. His first solo effort, it's a more off-kilter, subtler prospect. Opening with the rolling, acoustic psych-folk of 'Is It Wrong To Lose Faith In the Person You Used To Love', 'I Dream Of Black' takes a gentle sonic swim through seas of reverb, washing up on shores of song that range from the sci-fi Dandy Warhols shuffle of 'The Runaround' to the Jim Noir-ish 'This Is Just A Little Interlude...'.

Plan B - I Dream Of Black

The sound of a helpless romantic with a morbid fascination for dark noise sure can make for interesting listening. Being one of The Electric Soft Parade brothers, playing in Brakes (and now Brighton style-manglers Restlesslist) obviously isn't enough to quench Thomas White's hunger for expression, and expression seems the key to I Dream Of Black. 'The Runaround' is music as sinister nightmare. 'Will The Moon Ever Rise Again', meanwhile, mines a doomed sadness that would make nightmares seem welcome. This is some black magic.

N: This guy's the singer/songwriter from the Electric Soft Parade, so high hopes of this one. Let's press play... Tone?

T: Kicking off with the lengthy titled "Is It Wrong To Lose Faith In The Person You Used To Love", it is clear that White is a fan of the Bon Iver or Bonnie "Prince" Billy brand of folk music, but then he startles us with a glimpse of the dark side on "The Runaround", which perhaps recalls days listening to "God's Own Medicine" in his younger days. Although most of this stuff is pretty tender, there is definitely an element of something not being quite right, a rather fractured longing appearing to be at the heart of the matter. Intense and brooding, and not an easy listen, but certainly a rewarding one.

N: Definitely. With those darker shades, from a band wearing sunglasses at midnight, and a knee length black raincoat in the mid-day sun. Not going all out to declare themselves 'goth', but certainly hearing the longing for a darker side. I would have to say that this is an album with a deeper being, from the held back numbers such as "I Dream Of Black", not unsurprisingly, to the shade wearing number "The Runaround", where it's Wayne Hussey and Andrew Eldritch I can almost see in the darker corner of the recording studio.

T: One of this month's pleasant surprises. A very impressive CD indeed. 9/10

They will open Friday's (8th) proceedings in the main room, 'bout 7. The event will also feature sets from such new and exciting groups as Chrome Hoof, Restlesslist, Brakes, Camera Obscura and Shout Out Louds. Banzai!!!

P.S.....i should just give a lil' mention to the new Cottonmouth Rocks 7" single, 'Witch Doctor'. It'll be out on the 14th of July, on the 'fast becoming extremely reliable' Drift Records (possibly just the website - i dunno, innit).....anyway, it's bound to be lushatronic, so check the bad-boy out y'all!!!

What a record! I expected a kind of demo record since Tom said it was full of half finished stuff but it's great. Starry night#3, man, it's like Robert Wyatt playing Air's the virgins suicide, that clarinet sound is like a sad whale. Absolutely beautiful.
