Colon cleansing, good or bad?
Movie stars, artists, reporters, everyone has done it. Chances are you probably know at least 2 persons who have used colon cleansing. It has been around for centuries and since its early days people have wondered if it actually helps people. Today, the majority of people believe that colon cleansing purifies and enhances the digestive system but a new report published on the 1st of August 2011 might change the way we feel about colon cleansing. It says actually offers no benefits but what is even more shocking it that it might harm the body.
The whole industry of colon cleansing relies on the assumption that waste products build up in the colon and it can enter the bloodstream and poisoning ourselves. Over time several methods appeared through which this procedure can be achieved. Some are better than others, among this variety of methods you will find supplements and enema like practice of flushing out the colon with liquids. It is up to you and your doctor to decide what method is best suited for you.
A team of researchers led by Dr. Ranit Mishori reviewed case studies and the results showed that most of the patients who underwent colon cleansing procedures have suffered from numerous adverse effects. These effects came under many forms such as mild cramping, nausea to more serious effects as kidney failure. These results are shared by other doctors at Georgetown University Hospital who have noticed an increase in the number of patients who suffer from these adverse effects. The reports also says that not only does colon cleansing give adverse effects but the equipment used for hydrotherapy, the method used for colon cleansing that uses water to push and eliminate residual material from the colon, is not FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved.
Doctors recommend colon cleansing before surgery and for this case there is equipment which is FDA approved. But doctors do not recommend colon cleansing for any other reason except surgery. As for dietary supplements used for colon cleansing, most of them are very misleading or even false and in most cases they have no effects at all.
